I am analyzing the film stills from A Beautiful Mind

Still 1 - This is a scene where John is talking to his psychiatrist after being tied up, He sees Charles appear and this scene just puts into play that if viewers were confused or unsure they aren't at all now. The psychiatrist says there is no one there and I  find it interesting that Charles doesn't at all say anything. Once the nurses come in to get him he insists he is being held against his will by Russian spies, so once again we as the viewers get an even more clear look into what's going on with him. although we know that Charles is a figment of his imagination he accuses him of being a liar and it becomes very evident that Nash is hurt and troubled.


Still 2 - We meet Alicia in this scene she comes into Nash's office and is talking to him . She is wearing a pretty coral dress to stand out against the rest of the scene which is very dull and neutral. We can see John Nash is enticed with her. She has curled hair that frames her face and her skin is almost glowing. This is to make her appear angelic and to give her a very grand entrance. I could use this to introduce his wife in my paper and explain her ways and how soft she is.

Portraying Schizophrenia in A BEautiful Mind

This movie displays the life of John Nash who is a brilliant mathematician who suffers from Schizophrenia and has visual hallucinations that he is being followed be Soviet agents. It shows=cases how he copes and learns to live functionally with this disorder.

This is a case study on several families in Ireland. Several parents to adults with schizophrenia were studied to see the effects on family life and how difficult it is to deal with. I am going to use this study to compare how accurate or inaccurate the film portrayed John Nash’s home life and how his wife coped with his diagnosis.

This is an article published in a health magazine in 2005. It is done in a short test format, with the answers underneath the multiple choice options. It is helpful because it provides information in a very fun way and its information that even some scholarly articles do not touch on. I will use this as a source of background on the topic of schizophrenia to compare and contrast with how it is depicted in the movie.

Blog Post # 1

I will be writing on the topic of Portrayal on the Human Mind in Film. I will be specifically dealing with the film A Beautiful mind. I want to focus on how schizophrenia is portrayed in film, and based on John Nash was portrayed properly and what wasn’t.

My first article is by Malcolm Ritter, it is titled Schizophrenia: The Next Step. It was written in an Australian newspaper in 1999. Although it is quite dated I think the information is still very useful. This article I found in LexisNexis. This article speaks on how far science is coming with the possibility of finding a drug to treat Schizophrenia, but more importantly it delivers several important statistics related to treatment and diagnosis of schizophrenia. One thing talked about was how the disease was being studied and believed to not be a genetic trait that could be passed down.  It also speaks on the fact that some erratic behavior is gradually amplified over time, which relates to my movie because John Nash’s hallucinations get worse and worse.  This article although not in its entirety can be easily related to my topic, however the information in the article is useful in my comparing the life of a real schizophrenic to what Hollywood tried to portray of John Nash. I chose this source because honestly it was the only few I found that could be used towards my paper.

My second article is one written by Alexandra Pazitch, for Mental Health Week in May 2005. The article is titled: What is schizophrenia and is a short test to challenge what people either know or think they know of the illness. For my paper do want to do a little background on the topic of schizophrenia and this article had several questions that provided new information for me. Did you know that it depends on whom in your family, if any, is ill to determine how likely you are to have the disease? It can range from 10 in 100 to 1 in 100. Several myths were shot down in the quiz as well. The answers are right under the answer choices. This article as well was chosen because it was most relatable to what I would like to write about.

My Research Topic

My research topic is going to be Portraying Human mind in Film, but I am not sure of what movie I want to use as my main source. I am in between Enduring Love and The Notebook, I am interested in doing something different and looking at how different people view mental disorders.
